Report of 25th March Spring Conference on Global Terrorism – The Peace Movement Response

Uniting for Peace and PeaceJam hosted a joint Spring Conference on “Global Terrorism – The Peace Movement Response” and attracted over 100 people. A complimentary lunch was served by Uniting for Peace. It was an all day event held at Wesley’s Chapel, London. Although was planned over a year ago, it’s timing was grimly relevant, being held only three days after the Westminster incident.

The event was ably chaired by Rita Payne, President Emeritus Commonwealth Journalists Association. The distinguished speakers among them Ambassador Claus Grube (Danish Ambassador to UK), stressed the need for global cooperation through the United Nations for ending terrorism. Fiona Macauly, Director of PeaceJam UK and Senior Lecturer of University of Bradford explored how we can build peace successfully. Makram Khoury Machool, (Founder Director, European Centre for the Study of Extremism, Cambridge), examined the war on terror from the angle of Shia-Sunni rivalry and violent interpretation of faith traditions. Brian Cooper examined the dangerous consequences of ongoing terrorism and suggested interfaith solutions to deal with it. Vijay Mehta explored root causes of terrorism and put a ten point plan as a way forward to tackle this complex phenomenon in cooperation with United Nations, Governments and like minded organisations.

A vibrant Q/A session followed the speakers which went on till the end of the evening. The event was a great networking opportunity.

It was decided at the conference that a ten point plan, the outcome of the conference document called “Responding to Terrorism – A Ten Point Plan for Implementation” should be sent to Prime Minister’s office and Foreign and Commonwealth Office for combating terror.
